Watson & Hillhouse Buy BSP Piling Hammers

To ensure its customers continue to be supplied with the most reliable, work proven and technically advanced equipment available, Watson & Hillhouse, one of the UK’s leading piling equipment hire specialists, has chosen to invest £1 million with Ipswich-based BSP International Foundations (BSP) to supply the company with two of its heavy-duty CG range of piling hammers and a CX110 piling hammer as part of its upgrading and expanding hire fleet.

The two BSP heavy-duty hammers comprise a CG180 and a CG240 which have been designed and developed to meet the needs of civil engineering contractors with a requirement for hammers in specific weight ranges. Watson and Hillhouse specified that the hammers were available with different drop weights which mean the CG180, normally fitted with a 12t dropweight, now has the option of fitting either 14t or 16t dropweights therefore enabling it to operate in CG210 and CG240 modes.

Similarly, the CG240 is supplied with a 16t drop-weight but a 20t drop-weight is included in the specification enabling the hammer to be operated as a CG300 hammer capable of driving 2.4m diameter piles. The additional dropweights underline the versatility and flexibility of the CG range of impact piling hammers manufactured by BSP.

The CX110 is the largest of a four-model CX range of hammers. Fitted with a nine tonne dropweight the hammer has a maximum impact energy of 106kNm and is designed for driving a wide range of bearing and sheet piles. It is available with legs and inserts or pile sleeves for use freely suspended, or with back guides for operating from a piling rig.

Two of the hammers were delivered at the end of 2013 and have been deployed for use on construction sites around the UK while the third will be delivered early this year to a UK contractor waiting to take delivery.

Watson & Hillhouse’s managing director, Phil Bell said, “We have owned and operated BSP piling equipment since we started 42 years ago and have always found the hammers to give great performance. BSP has a proven product line-up which is reliable and stands the test of time. With BSP just five minutes from our office we have always maintained a first-class relationship.”

BSP’s range of CG piling hammers consists of four base models offering drop-weights from 12t up to 20t. All the hammers are capable of driving a variety of bearing piles including steel tube, combi piles, H-sections and reinforced concrete piles. Impact energy extends from 176kNm up to 294kNm while blow rate at rated energy is 34 blows per minute. They are operated from piling rig leaders or crane suspended and can be supplied with a power pack if required.

Watson & Hillhouse, based at Whitehouse Road, Ipswich, have been selling and hiring piling equipment both in the UK and overseas since it was founded by Robin Watson in 1972. The company operates a comprehensive hire fleet in excess of 100 units comprising vibrating and hydraulic impact hammers, excavator-mounted vibrators, pile presses, water jetting units, air hammers, leaders, power packs and ancillary equipment. All of which provides customers with the widest possible choice to suit their requirements.

The company’s philosophy is not only to own and operate state-of-the-art piling equipment but to ensure it is fully prepared and tested before every hire and delivered to site on time. The company also offers advice on hammer selection, operation, safety and boasts an on-site servicing that is second to none.

To meet these criteria, highly experienced service engineers, many of whom complete Watson & Hillhouse’s four-year apprentice scheme, are on call to support customers wherever they are located and can respond quickly to any problems that may occur on site. Workshop technicians are based at the company’s headquarters and engineering facility in Ipswich carry out running repairs, servicing and, when necessary, major overhauls. The company also operates a Warrington depot to ensure total on-site back-up and support anywhere across the UK and Ireland.
