Meet Our People: Matthew Lovell

We are delighted to shine a spotlight on Matthew Lovell, whose 25 years of committed service have made an indelible mark on BSP-TEX. His journey is one of adaptability, skill, and camaraderie – a story that truly embodies the spirit of our company.

The Path to BSP-TEX
Matthew’s previous role was at Bull Motors, but in 2000, with manufacturing relocating to Birmingham, he found himself seeking new opportunities. He applied for a labourer’s job at a machine shop on Claydon Business Park, but fate had other plans. Recognising his expertise, the business owner suggested he look across the road at Tex Engineering, who were seeking someone with electrical knowledge. Matthew met Bill Chambers, the Managing Director at the time, who immediately saw his potential and offered him a position on the spot.

In 2021, following the merger of Tex Engineering with its sister company, Matthew and his colleagues officially became part of the BSP-TEX family, continuing his legacy through a new chapter.

Early Roles and Growing Expertise
Matthew’s initial work at Tex Engineering centred around fitting and installing electrics for Pure Zone water purification assemblies. These sophisticated systems found their way into prestigious locations such as Harrods and Cadbury, and Matthew often travelled to these sites to provide servicing and support. While he occasionally assisted Paul Mark on the administrative side, his true passion remained hands-on work in the workshop.

He became well-versed in operating and maintaining the company’s spiral tube welding machines and eventually played a key role in their decommissioning and export. Matthew’s breadth of knowledge and practical skills quickly became apparent, earning him a reputation as a “jack of all trades,” but it is his exceptional talent as an electrician that truly sets him apart. Whether working on the factory floor or visiting customer sites, his versatility made him an invaluable member of the team.

Contributions and Innovations
In more recent years, Matthew has taken on the role of fitter, assembling and wiring BSP-TEX’s diverse product range, including bitumen sprayers, burners, Trojan asphalt mixers, pre-coated chip spreaders, and trailers. Among his many achievements, his pivotal involvement in developing the BSP-TEX M95 Mk2 Pre-Coated Chip Spreader stands out. This state-of-the-art machine boasts innovative, electronically controlled features – such as wireless remote operation, adjustable gates for chip flow, numerous safety measures, and advanced lighting systems. Matthew’s expertise has driven significant improvements in both function and efficiency.

A Mentor and Team Player
Matthew is always ready to share his knowledge, mentoring apprentices and fostering a spirit of teamwork. He has guided many colleagues, both seasoned professionals and those just starting out, helping them master new skills and techniques. His approachable manner and willingness to lend a hand have made a lasting impact on those around him.

The Man Behind the Tools
Beyond his technical prowess, Matthew is renowned for his good humour and lively personality. He is known for his spot-on impersonations of colleagues, including the much-missed Wayne Luckie, former Sales Manager for the Road Maintenance Division. His wit and warmth make him a cherished member of the BSP-TEX family.

Matthew’s friendly and professional approach, combined with his knack for diagnosing and repairing even legacy machinery, has earned the respect and admiration of both colleagues and customers. Companies such as Clee Hill, Eurovia, and Toppesfield have all benefited from his expertise and dedication.

Adapting to Change
Over the past 25 years, Matthew has witnessed – and adapted to – tremendous changes within the electronics and plant maintenance industry. He has embraced new technologies, such as Programmable Logic Controllers, and remains committed to the craft of component-level repairs, even as the trend shifts towards whole-unit replacements. As BSP-TEX has evolved – integrating innovations like SolidWorks 3D CAD modelling, ISO9001:2015 Quality Management Systems, concurrent engineering, and agile supply chains – so too has Matthew grown, continuously expanding his knowledge and skills.

A Legacy of Excellence
Matthew’s perseverance, resilience, and ability to work calmly under pressure make him indispensable. He is a pillar of the team, always ready to rise to any challenge.

Life Beyond Work
Outside of work, Matthew enjoys attending air shows and music concerts. A fan of radio, he was especially fond of the late Steve Wright’s shows – never missing an opportunity for some “Serious Jockin’ – no G!”

Thank You, Matthew
Congratulations, Matthew, on your 25 years of dedicated service. Your unwavering commitment, boundless expertise, and positive spirit have played a crucial role in our company’s ongoing success. We are immensely grateful for your loyalty, and we look forward to many more years of working together.
